While catching up on my reading this morning, I came across this article from the new york times on challenges faced by some advertisers on social media platforms. The story focuses on Proctor & Gamble’s use of facebook ads. Apparently, they’ve been having some difficulties:
Ted McConnell, manager of interactive marketing and innovation at P.& G., said, “I really don’t want to buy any more banner ads in Facebook.” His remarks were offered as his personal reflections, not the official position of his employer, and were available on the Web in a podcast of the talk
I read about half of this article before I went on a mission: searching to see if I’ve somehow missed a trend shift (rip van winkle style sleeping for a 100 years?) and facebook became a dead medium. Thankfully after scanning through over 2000 articles on my google reader archives I find no such horrid news… So I return to my original thought – it’s P&G’s marketing approach that is ineffective, not Facebook itself. VISIBILITY IS KEY…
I know many business that are struggling right now. I know many industries that are challenged by this economy, by the market, by the time of year. Yet I also know some businesses that are thriving, even in more “impacted” industries.
What’s the secret? The heading on this article may have given it away, but yes – visibility is key. But what’s that mean? What’s visibility anyway?
Visibility is being seen some people think this is being seen anywhere, but for the folks that don’t have 10 million to spend on a dozen billboards, visibility should be focused on the groups and environments in which your clients and prospects thrive. Read more
I was speaking this morning at IMC SoCal on the topic of Social Media as it applies to the business of being a consultant. As I, a 28 yr old white girl, am standing at the front of a room predominantly 40+ men, chattering on about Myspace and Facebook I realized that I’d lost half the room. These new terms, terms like networks, communities, social media and blogging, are all terms that we just “made up” in the last 10 years. It’s not that these folks were out of touch, it’s that they are so focused on the very particular needs of the industries they serve that they just missed out on it.
I’m standing before project management consultants, sales compensation consultants, HR practice consultants… and not the new guys that became consultants 10 minutes after they received the pink slip from xxyczz company – these guys (and gals) have been consultants for 20, 30 even 40 years. How do you relate their world to the world of Myspace and vlogging and twitter? Read more
While doing my morning reading I stumbled upon a great question:
Are clicks and impressions still the standard for online advertising success?
As a publisher, are clicks and impressions still the standard for online advertising success? If not, what are you attaching every dollar to? Social media platforms like Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter allow you to spread a message quickly to a captive audience, but what good are 20,000 friends and one million video views if there is no direct dollar amount associated to it? An impression and a click are tied to a dollar, but if you’re not using these as the benchmark then what good is your inventory?
So are clicks and impressions still the standard, or can you convince your CFO that having friends is more profitable?
I’m finding more often that this is a common question, as the traditional marketing methods give way to the more interactive and social mediums. It can all be very confusing (I know, I’ve inspired many MANY headaches), but there are some simple things to know which may clear this confusion up. Read more
Social Media is media that utilizes a social platform – its meant to interact with a person in a manner similar to person-person interaction. This means video, photo-sharing, blogging, profiles, tagging, commenting on eachother’s items, friend circles, groups, and on and on and on.
What makes social media so special is it’s two main applications: social media optimization and social media marketing. Social media optimization is the trick/expertise/pure luck of creating social media in a way that will encourage it’s spread (aka. viral) across the web. This is where rules like no videos over 2 minutes come in to play – 2 min is a very viral-able time block. Social media marketing is focused more on the pr, content, and collaborative aspects of social media – this isn’t too far off from traditional marketing and pr… just add tech and a strong narrowing of topics/audience (there’s blogs for people who love radishes for goodness sakes!)
Great info, but why should you care?

You can have your own radio station? Sinnary Sam does and gave us the first interview here. In case you didn’t notice, she used BlogTalkRadio
Some of the most boring tools have adapted to support mobile technology. Recently I discovered Amtrak has created a great mobile app. Check it out the next time you travel by train
One of my LinkedIN students (yes, I’m bragging) has recently taken her training to a new level. Betsy Klein is now the LinkedIN administrator for the entire American Photographers Association. Don’t believe me? Check it out here

TECH LOVE OF THE MONTH
Recently spotted (in Lucky Mag) as a favorite of Lauren Bower, this battery recharger has become the toy I’m dying for at the moment.
I do SO MUCH with my smartphone – from the usual calling/texting/emailing I also rely heavily on the camera, web, and even memos (task lists and on-the-go blog writing) – my battery can barely make it through the train ride TO an LA or SD event without warnings. This toy is slim enough to fit in my purse and I’m counting on it being the trick to get me the whole ride back.

A good friend of mine sent this over:
Hi everyone!
I have created a Kid’s Skateboard Art Contest to allow kids to be creative and expand their imaginations.
The winning child’s artwork will be manufactured by Crimson Skateboards into kids size skate decks to be sold nationwide and portion of proceeds to benefit Festival of Children, a non profit organization that hosts and donates 100% of proceeds to over 300 charitable organizations from Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation to Make a Wish Foundation to
Easter Seals, etc.
Its very simple, let the kids design anything they want. The theme is “A Perfect World”. Any form of
media can be used, crayon, paint, pen, marker, etc. etc.
Please take the time to print out as many of the the attached art sheets and give out to as many
kids ages 10 yrs old and under. Please make sure to set your printer to landscape and set “fit to page”
Please feel free to forward this out to everyone you know with kids!
Good Luck and Thank you!

At an event last week I was caught in a conversation with someone who felt the need to share (vehemently) his theory on the scam of social media.
This gentleman (lets call him Ed) is of the opinion that LinkedIN was created to gather people’s information under the guise of social networking… until the owners sell it – making boatloads of money and taking all your private information.
For me, as an educated (I try to be anyway) user who has sat on the sidelines watching the tool develop before jumping on the proverbial bandwagon, Ed sounds like Mel Gibson from Conspiracy Theory.
It’s important to note that Ed’s fears are not entirely unfounded. In late 2007 a social networking site known as Quechup received alot of bad press for allegedly sending spam emails to the entire contact list of each user (without the user’s knowledge). While Quechup denies these issues in a statement September 17th, 2007.
This is exactly why I encourage people to not be “early adopters” of technology in which you put your personal contact information. Wait a while, until you see a couple of buyouts or until people smarter than you are using and recommending the software (not to imply anything about your IQ – having friends smarter than you are is an integral part to staying safe in the technology age).
